Hector Servadac

New York: Scribner, Armstrong & Co., 1878. First Illustrated American Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. Original brick-red pictorial cloth over beveled boards. 8vo - 370,[2 ads] pp. and containing 96 full-page illustrations by Paul Phillippoteaux. Translated from the original french by Ellen E. Frewer. This edition printed from the same plates as the British Sampson & Low edition. Both of these editions were issued in November of 1877 to capture, it is surmised by Meyer, the Christmas shopping market. I have seen this with at least one other Verne title. "Readers of the marvellous in literature will eagerly welcome Jules Verne's new story, Hector Servadac, which promises to fully sustain the reputation of its popular author. The heroes of this story were carried away through space on the comet 'Gallia,' and their adventures are recorded with all Jules Verne's characteristic spirit..." This copy is a remarkable survivor and scarce in this superb condition. It is very clean, bright and solid. Some very minor restoration has been done to the foot of the spine. Cited - Bleiler (1948), Meyer 33, Taves and Michaluk Jr. VO16.
