Austin Clarke was deeply interested in Irish Myth and Legend. This book celebrates that interest. It tells of a young woman, Orla, who is trying to become pregnant. She is advised to go to the well of St. Naal, for it has magical powers. Orla, along with her maid, set off on a journey to find the well, having several adventurers along the way. Among other themes, this book explores the tension between ancient pagan beliefs with the power of the Catholic Church.
