Under The Sea Wind. A Naturalist's Picture Of Ocean Life

New York: Simon & Schuster, 1941. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine / Fine. Original blue cloth, decorated on the front panel with a sea bird in gilt and with lettering in gilt to the spine with a black background. Large 8vo - 314pp - including glossary. An exremely clean, bright and solid copy of Carson's first published book. The book was based on an initial short piece titled "Undersea" which appeared in Atlantic Monthly in 1937. She was later approached by Dutch artist Howard Frech and encouraged to expand on these themes. Carson stated that her goal in writing this book was "to make the sea and its life as vivid a reality for those who may read the book as it has become for me during the past decade." The culmination of their efforts, author and artist both, resulted in this lovely book - her first, and her proclaimed favorite. It is certainly the most attractive of her books. Simon & Schuster clearly believed in her and the project and they did not cut any corners.
