The Thing In The Woods

New York: Robert McBride & Co., 1924. First Edition thus. Hardcover. Very Good / Very Good. Original teal colored cloth, lettered in yellow to the front panel and spine. 8vo - 291 pp. In a bright and extraordinary example of this compelling dust jacket, drawn by Hans Stengel. The front free endpaper has a small piece missing from the outer corner and, I must say, looks just like the bite of an animal. Just saying! Top edge stained yellow. Bottom edge and fore-edge rough cut. Margery Williams lived for a while in rural East Central Pennsylvania, where this story is set. She wrote the book years later in residence in Italy. The jacket is not price-clipped and there is the faintest stain at the top edge of the jacket's spine. Some minor edge-wear along the bottom edge of the front panel of the jacket. Ms. Williams is better known, perhaps, as the author of The Velveteen Rabbit. She originally wrote this book in 1913 and was published by Duckworth & Co. She re-vised the work for this publication. A very rare example of this wonderful atmospheric work. Listed in Bleiler, page 287.
