The Whole Art Of The Stage

London: William Cadman, 1684. First English Language Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Quarto volume, bound in modern "Cambridge" style full sprinkled calf. Spine is a full shade lighter than the boards. Title page reads - "The Whole Art Of The Stage/Containing/Not only the Rules of Drammatick Art, but/many curious Observations about it./Which may be of great use to the Authors, Actors,/and Spectators of Plays./Together with much Critcial Learning about the Stage and Plays of the Antients./Written in French by the command of /Cardinal Richelieu./By Monsieur Hedelin, Abbot of Aubignac, and now/made English." [Title,( ),(1-6),1-176]. A lovely and complete copy of this very rare and fascinating theatrical study. In his preface, the un-named translator explains the time gap from the original French edition of 1657 to the current translation as being delayed by the English Civil War. Wing, A-4185. (note - listed under Aubignac - not Hedelin.) Full notation at the foot of the title page reads - "Printed for the author, and sold by William Cadman (note - Wing states "Cademan") at the Pope's-Head in the New Exchange; Rich. Bentley, in Russellstreet (sic), Covent-Garden; Sam. Smith at the Prince's Arms in St. Paul's Church-Yard; & T. Fox at Westminster-Hall, 1684"
