Love Songs Of Childhood

Chicago: Lakeside Press, 1905. First Edition thus. Hardcover. Fine. This beautiful book is a facsimile edition published by the Lakeside Press in 1905. This edition consisted of 500 copies printed on imperial Japan vellum and signed by the author's wife, Julia Sutherland Field, and the couple's five children. The copy on offer here is unnumbered. 4to edition on 90 unpaginated leaves, printed on rectos only. Finely bound in vivid burnt orange crushed morocco with stunning Art Nouveau floral decorations situated on each of the covers outer four corners. Within these decorations lay four delicate green petals or leaves creating a lovely counterpoint. This style is reminiscent of Lorenz Schwartz but this binding is unattributed. To my eye it also reminds me of the work of the Monastery Hill Bindery. The spine has six compartments and is also decorated with the same decorative elements and again with the green accents against the brown and gold. The beauty of the binding continues to the inner dentelles with solid and dotted gilt designes as ruled borders and gilt corner devices. Matching dusky orange silk moirÈ doublures and endpapers, front and rear. Also included on a leaf located amidst the table of contents is a holograph inscription in Julia Field's hand - "We, the wife and children/of Eugene Field, are proud to/ inscribe this, his most intimate/book, Julia Sutherland Field.l/Mary F. F. Englar / Eugen Field. II./ Frederick S. Field./ Roswell F. Field/ Ruth Field Foster."
