Missoula, Montana: State University Of Montana, 1933. First edition. Card Stock. Near Fine. Bound in pale blue/green card stock with lettering in black to the front panel. Black binders tape to the spine, as issued. Merriam is probably the author though a safer conjecture is that Merriam is the leader of a pack of compilers. On pages VII and VIII there are dozens of names listed from Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. These were the readers and critics gathered to read all of the available material. One of the names listed is Verne Bright who later became the State Editor of Oregon for the Writers Project of the Works Project Administration. Laid in this volume is a single sheet poem written by Mr. Bright and signed by him. This book came to a very serious WPA collector from Verne Bright - and then to me. This book is primarily a shout out to librarians to pay attention to the wealth of writers from the Northwest. "Recognizing the fact that Northwest writers and their writings are little know to librarians, to teachers in grade schools, high schools, and colleges, to the general reading public, and among themselves, and desiring to discover what of worth and promise exists in the growing body of Northwest writings, the members of the Inland Empire Council of Teachers of English in April 1931 appointed a committee to read this literature with a view to compilation of a list of its items that should carry recommendation or refusal of recommendation of those writings for school and college use." i - viii, 69 single sided typed paper. Very scarce. A solid copy. Gathered from a large WPA collection but this work precedes that organization.
