Bowen was the author of over 150 books, this title being perhaps her finest. A gothic tale of witchcraft and horror set in Medeival times. This copy with the nameplate of famous publisher, author, and book collector, Michael Sadleir at the top left corner of the front paste-down. Sadleir (1888 - 1957) worked as a publisher for Constable. He also assembled an impressive collection of Victorian Literature, the bulk of which now resides at the UCLA Special Collections library. As an author, he is perhaps best known for "Fanny By Gaslight (1940) a look at the lives of prostitutes working in London. This is a remarkably fresh, clean, and attractive copy.
