London: Hamish Hamilton, (1936). First UK edition. Hardcover. Near Fine / Very Good. Original black cloth, lettered in gilt to the spine. In a lovely example of the scarce dust jacket. The jacket is clipped but has a 5s round price sticker to the spine. The jacket is very bright with a few very minor areas of chipping, the most substantial is to the heel of the spine just impacting the "MI" of Hamilton. Lovely and very atmospheric jacket design by Tony Wearl. Translated from the original German by Jan Noble. This book was immediately popular in Germany and Australia, where much of the action is set. It was reprinted numerous times. This, the first English edition, is quite scarce, particularly in the dust jacket.
