Pittsburgh: Museum Extension Project, Circa 1939. First edition. Soft Cover. Very Good. Illustrated soft covered quarto. The text included is 114 pages which describe 114 hand painted plates issued by the Museum Extension Project of the Works Progress Administration. This volume contains the text only. Front interior hinge re-inforced with white binders tape. Contents include: Ancient & Classical, 35,000 B.C. to 400 A.D.; Medieval & Renaissance, 400 A.D. to 1500; Tudor, 1500 A.D. to 1600; Seventeenth Century, 1620 A.D. to 1715; Eighteenth Century, 1715 A.D. to 1789; Late Eighteenth & Early Nineteenth Century, 1789 A.D. to 1840; Late Nineteenth Century, 1840 A.D. to 1900. The text is typewriter font then mimeographed which has browned along the edges. There is written in pencil to the cover "Office Copy" which could be easily erased if you so chose. This material was created as a specific WPA program to provide educational materials to schools free of charge. The program was based in Pennsylvania and had offices state-wide producing all kinds of materials, besides the costume plates mentioned here, dolls, puppets, dioramas, models etc. The material was also offered to other states through the WPA. A fascinating and underappreciated program of the WPA.
