A South Dakota Guide

Pierre: State Publishing Company, 1938. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Original red leatherette covers, lettered in white to the front panel and spine. Octavo, (xxiii), 441pp. Compiled by The Federal Writers' Project of the Works Progress Administration, State of South Dakota. An American Guide Series volume. Illustrated throughout. Map to the front free endpapers. Folding state map housed in a pocket at the intererior rear boards. The verso of this map has six smaller area maps. One of the rarest titles from the American Guide Series. From an edition of 2500 copies only, and the printer destroyed the type after the print-run. This copy without the dust jacket. Relates stories of Wild Bill Hickock, Sitting Bull, and Calamity Jane. This copy is a solid and bright copy. There is a shadow from the removal of a book-plate to the front paste-down and a faint previous owner stamp to the front free end-paper. Both the shadow and the stamp are on top of the state map. The map at rear is particularly thick and, over time, has caused the text block to warp a bit. The boards, however, remain true and solid. A very nice copy of this extremely scarce volume. Dykes, #307.
