New York (Chicago): Fleming Publishing (Wilcox & Follett Co.), (1941)? Hardcover. Fine / Good. Original light brown cloth on boards, stamped in dark brown. Square 12mo. Unpaginated (58)pp. Compiled by Workers of the Writers' Program of the Work Projects Administration in the State of Montana. Illustrated with 85 photographs, including endpapers. The first volume from a planned 48, of the American Pictorial Guide Series. Only three ever saw the light of day. A very clean, bright and solid copy of the book. The jacket is missing the top one inch at the spine, extending to the rear panel. There is a cartoonish state map to the verso of the jacket by Neil Sharkey. Scharf goes into some very helpful detail to explain the two publishers. I will quote him. "Sometime in 1941, Fleming Company obviously began to have some serious financial problems. Issues of the Virginia and Vermont books began to appear with a small laid-in note announcing: 'This book is now published by Wilcox & Follett Co. 1255 S. Wabash Ave. Chicago 5, Ill.' This marked the end of Fleming's involvement and, in fact, the termination of the entire Series." Scharf & Schoyer, p. 163. I can add one update. The above mentioned card sits inside this copy of Montana as well. Dykes, #162; Scharf & Schoyer, # 334.
