Festivals In San Francisco

Stanford University: James Ladd Delkin for Stanford University, 1939. First edition. Hardcover. Fine / Near Fine. Perhaps the loveliest volume to be issued from The Federal Writers' Project. Small quarto, 67pp. Boards of cloth and illustrated paper. With a total of 16 color illustrations, four being full page by the wonderful Pauline Vinson. Printed by The Grabhorn Press on Hazelbourne paper, it is one from an un-numbered limited edtion of 1000 copies. This copy is also distinguished by having the exceedingly rare dust jacket, that Scharf & Schoyer allude to somewhat wistfully. It is indeed a jacket of plain gray paper but this volume has it. It shows some minor wear and chipping but overall remains a near fine example. And there is more - this volume contains the original advertising prospectus that also has another color illustration by Vinson. It is very nicely produced single-fold on excellent paper - with content and illustration on the cover and one inside page. There is also laid-in with no explanation (certainly not by me) of a Currier & Ives reproduction of the San Francisco Post Office. Dykes, #23; Scharf & Schoyer, #67.
