Expostion De La Doctrine De L'…glise Catholique Orthodoxe AccompagnÈe Des DiffÈrences Qui Se Recontrent Dans Les Autres …glises ChretiÈnnes

Paris: Fischbacher, 1884. Second edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. A lovely copy of an extremely rare text. GuettÈe began his religious life a Roman Catholic but later broke from the Church after becoming convinced there were many flaws in the Roman Orthodoxy. He wrote many books on his theological concerns. His books from the 19th century are now quite scarce. This copy, states second edition on the title page. It has been rebound in gray cloth with a leather spine label, lettered in gilt. There is also bound in a curious duplicate title page of a darker shade that has been trimmed and mounted then bound in. It might be a remnant of the original cover. This copy has the bookplates of Robert Woods Bliss and Mildred Bliss. They were the influential owners of Dumbarton Oaks in Washington, D.C. and bequeathed their huge collection to Harvard University. Dumbarton Oaks is now one of the most important research centers for Byzantine studies. At the rear of the book there appears a page of hand-written comments, in pencil, on one of the bland end-pages. Small 12mo. 505pp.
