Report on European Dock-Yards

Washington, D.C. Government Printing Office, 1889. Second edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. Quarto, 1/4 recent leather spine and corners, original russet cloth, lettered in gilt. A very solid and pleasing copy. Naval Constructor Philip Hichborn toured European dock yards and ship-building facilities toward the end of the 20th Century and filed this report. Seven photo-gravure plates plus a frontis of the author. Forty seven additional maps, plans and diagrams, including a massive six-fold illustration of of the Mersey's Gun-Deck. Some of the maps are particularly interesting because in the decades to come they became so strategically significant due to Nazi occupation - i.e. Lorient, Brest and Cherbourg. Other maps include detail of the ship-building facilities of Glasgow and Tilbury Dock-Yard on the Thames. An extraordinary volume.
