Hibernia Anglicana or The History of Ireland

London: Joseph Watts, 1689. FIRST. NF. Two folio volumes, ex-library, 1689-90. Lovely contemporary 1/2 leather binding with marbled boards. Red spine labels, lettered in gilt with gilt rules and date at the foot. Fleur-de-lis ornaments in compartments. Title page and folding map embossed. Some scattered foxing throughout, though the map remains extremely clean and bright. The large fold-out map of Ireland by Sir William Petty was considered an amazing improvement when it was first issued in 1685. See Tooley. Engraved frontispiece of William and Mary by R. White. The License Page is present as well. This copy was held in a research library and looks to have rarely been handled. The marks are subtle and few. This two volume set is now extremely handsome and, of course, quite scarce. Sir Richard Cox, 1650-1733, was created Chancellor of Ireland in 1703. The History of Ireland was compiled chiefly from the accounts of Sir John Temple and Dr. Borlase.

Price: $3,500.00
