The Man Of Death

London: Herbert Jenkins, (1946). First edition. Hardcover. Near Fine / Near Fine. Original orange cloth, lettered in black to the front panel and spine. The boards are very clean and bright with true corners. The lovely period dust jacket shows only minor wear and rubbing. The jacket is not clipped and shows the original 8s. 6d. net price on the front flap. A very attractive and solid copy of this very good vintage mystery. "In a lonely house upon an unfrequented part of the Norfolk coast a retired Cambridge professor is living by himself. Gradually he becomes aware that his house, which is built upon the site of an age-old ruined church, is being watched. In his perplexity he appeals to Gilbert Larose." There are secrets and treasure hidden within these walls. A surprisingly high body count in this well constructed thriller. The cat and mouse game of the criminals and retired detective Larose is quite compelling. This book also qualifies as a bibliomystery as much of the plot is propelled from information gathered from stolen ancient volumes. We even have to endure the truely horrific desecration of an old volume from a rare book room. The horror! The dust jacket is bright and quite lovely with a signature of sorts, a compound letter - blending P and T I think. Small discreet previous owner signature to the front free endpaper.
